AUGUST 31

Proverbs 6:30-31: "Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house."

AUGUST 30

Proverbs 16:29: "A violent man enticeth [tempts] his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good."

AUGUST 29

Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

AUGUST 28

2 Corinthians 11:3 [the apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthian church]: "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."

AUGUST 27

Hebrews 9:22: "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood [of animals in the Old Testament, and of Jesus in the New Testament] is no remission [or forgiveness, of sins]."

AUGUST 26

Ephesians 5:3-5: "But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting [joking], which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."

AUGUST 25

2 Timothy 4:2-4: "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

AUGUST 24

James 1:22: "But be ye doers of the word [of God--the Bible], and not  hearers only, deceiving your own selves."

AUGUST 23

2 Timothy 3:14-15 [the apostle Paul, addressing Timothy in a letter]: "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

AUGUST 22

1 Peter 2:11: "Dearly beloved, I [Peter] beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;"

AUGUST 21

John 15:1-6 [Jesus said]: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and  I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned."

AUGUST 20

James 1:17: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights [God], with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."

AUGUST 19

James 4:13-15: "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."

AUGUST 18

Psalm 139:14-16 [King David's prayer to God]: "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."

AUGUST 17

Mark 5:24-34: "And Jesus went with him [Jairus, to heal his little daughter, who was very sick]; and much people followed him, and thronged him. And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague."

AUGUST 16

Psalm 145:18-19: "The LORD is nigh [near] unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them."

AUGUST 15

Galatians 6:10: "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."

AUGUST 14

Romans 14:1-9: "Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs [vegetables]. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living."

[Note: According to the commentaries by Adam Clarke and Albert Barnes, the above verses were directed toward the early Christians and refer to Jewish ceremonial laws (such as not eating meat that had been offered to idols), not the moral ones.]

AUGUST 13

Romans 10:12: "For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him."

[Definition of the Greek, according to "Barnes' Notes" (the commentary by Albert Barnes): "Literally, those who dwelt in Greece, or those who spoke the Greek language. As the Jews, however, were acquainted chiefly with the Greeks, and knew little of other nations, the name Greek among them came to denote all who were not Jews; that is, the same as the Gentiles. The terms 'Jew and Greek,' therefore, include all mankind."]

AUGUST 12

Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance [self-control]: against such there is no law."

AUGUST 11

Acts 16:25-34: "And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.  But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house."

AUGUST 10

Matthew 4:1-4 [following his baptism]: "Then was Jesus led up of the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written [in the Bible], Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

AUGUST 9

Proverbs 1:10-19 [written by King Solomon]: "My son, if sinners entice thee [tempt you to do evil], consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily [secretly] for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain [restrain] thy foot from their path: For their feet
run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof."

AUGUST 8

Galatians 2:21 [the apostle Paul speaking]: "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."

AUGUST 7

Matthew 28:16-20: "Then the eleven disciples [the original twelve, minus Judas] went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him [Jesus], they worshipped him: but some [especially Thomas] doubted [that Jesus had risen from the dead]. And Jesus came and spake [spoke] unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway [always], even unto the end of the world. Amen."

AUGUST 6 - Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:1-12: "And seeing the multitudes, he [Jesus] went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples [followers] came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit
: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn
: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek
: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness
: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful
: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart
: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers
: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake
: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake
. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."

AUGUST 5

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 [the apostle Paul speaking, after he was caught up to the third heaven]: "And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice [three times], that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

AUGUST 4

Galatians 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

AUGUST 3

John 20:24-29 [Jesus had visited the disciples as they were gathered together following his resurrection]: "But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe [that Jesus is alive]. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."

AUGUST 2

Galatians 3:13: "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

AUGUST 1

Romans 15:13: "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in [be overflowing with] hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost."
